Although all of us have been around the pool sometime or another, we fail to realise that some facts that are thrown around with respect to swimming are not true. And other claims that we took for granted to be false are true.
This article aims to shed light on some of these myths and bust them or justify them.
1 – Helps You Breathe Better – Fact
Swimming against all odds, does help you control and regulate your breathing. It is very often recommended by doctors to asthma patients to increase their lung capacity and better their quality of life.
2 – You Never Forget It Once You Learn – TBD
This is something every one of us has heard – either from our swimming tutor, or from our parents as they dragged us to the pool early in the morning, for the classes.
This is something that is up for debate although Wikipedia says it is impossible to forget his to swim. It falls with other activities we unconsciously perform, like tying our shoelaces, and riding a bike.
But several people I know (and a lot of people on the internet) claim that they do not remember how to swim after having taken a long break. However they do seem to get the hang of it pretty quickly once they get into the water, and so, this statement is mostly true.
3 – Deeper The Pool, The Easier It Is To Swim – TBD
Personally, I feel this is true, as the water itself does the job of keeping you afloat, provided you’re horizontal, and don’t flail too much. However, that was only the case when I pushed myself to be in the deep pool when I learnt swimming.
If I didn’t know how to swim, I’d have steered clear of the pool, and as would any other person who doesn’t know how to swim. So, this statement is true for those who know how to swim.

4 – Chlorine Tans Your Skin – Myth
We all notice the tan marks our skin as soon as we start our classes. And we always ble the chlorine for it. But it is not true that chlorine is what causes the tan.
Chlorine with sunlight causes the tan. Without sunlight, say you take your lessons in an indoor pool, you’ll be tan free for sure.
