Various authorities, all over the world in many countries, have mandated all kinds of organizations to implement, employees undergoing of DOT Drug testing before they join the organization and take up their responsibilities. Initially, there was no such procedure that has to be followed anywhere. However, in the later periods, with the advancements in the technology facilitating the test for DOT Drug, and the severity involved with the behavior of the employees who have consumed the banned drugs, the authorities were forced to implement the DOT Drug testing procedure.
The below mentioned are only some of the many reasons that mandate following the DOT Drug testing procedure:
- Reasonable Cause/ Suspicion
If for any reason, any superior of any employee observes or suspects the employee of being under the influence of drugs, then it is compulsory to follow the DOT Drug testing procedure, to confirm being under the influence of drugs.
- Random Testing
In some places in the world, the respective authorities have mandated the organizations to follow DOT Drug testing procedure randomly on all the employees working in the organization, for every quarter in a year. In such random testing, all the employees working in the organization must be provided equal chance for the selection and testing in the Dot Drug testing procedure.
- Return-to-duty Testing
For instance, if an employee has violated drug and alcohol rules, and is returning to work after the completion of suspended period, then the employee is mandated to undergo the DOT Drug testing procedures, which are conducted under direct supervision of the superiors.
- Post-accident Testing
If an employee falls under the suspicion of the superiors for drug or alcohol consumption and meeting an accident while driving, the employee has to undergo the DOT drug testing procedure. Such an alcohol test owing to the suspicion of the superiors must be implemented within eight hours of the accident.
- Follow-up testing
This DOT drug testing procedure takes place after an employee returns to the duty after the completion of a particular period. This procedure while being implemented is conducted under the direct supervision of a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), in order to confirm the number of times the tests have been conducted on the employees, within a particular period of time.
In addition to the confirmation of number of times the tests have been conducted, the Substance Abuse Professional also needs to confirm on the substance that has been consumed by the employee.
